Description

This article provides the steps for adding iOS/tvOS devices to Apple School Manager or Apple Business using Apple Configurator 2 to be enrolled in Jamf Pro using Automated Device Enrollment.

  • iOS and tvOS devices need to be iOS 11+
  • Apple School/Business Manager account set up
  • Apple Configurator 2 for macOS (free from the Mac App Store)

Preparing Devices with Apple Configurator 2 for macOS

(Optional) Create a Wi-Fi Profile
Create a Wi-Fi profile in Apple Configurator 2 by going to:
File > New Profile > Wifi > Configure
Enter in the local network information and click Save.

Connect Device
Connect the device to the macOS computer and open Apple Configurator 2.

Select and Prepare
Select the device and click Prepare from the menu.

Manual Configuration Settings
Select Manual Configurationfrom the dropdown and check the boxes for:
  • Add to Device Enrollment Program
  • Allow Devices to pair with other computers (if desired).
⚠️ Important: Activate and complete enrollment should be UNCHECKED.

Server Configuration
If a server is not already configured, select New Server.

Host Name or URL
For Host name or URL – This URL is not used during the process of adding a device to AxM (Apple School/Business Manager), so we can leave it the default value that is generated while creating the server.

Server Warning Screen
We may see this screen – it is expected – click Next.

Proceed
Select Next.

Sign In to Apple Account
Sign into your Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager account.

Supervision Identity
Select Generate a new Supervision Identity or choose an existing one if created previously on that computer.

Setup Assistant Options
Select "Don't show any of these steps". This will be configured in your PreStage enrollment in Jamf Pro instead.

Wi-Fi Assignment
Select the Wi-Fi profile we created in Step 1, or alternatively manually connect the device to a network by clicking through the setup assistant just far enough to enter in the Wi-Fi credentials, but no farther.

Preparing and Wipe
Select Next – the device should show as preparing – let it run until it completes.
Warning: Do not unplug the device and do not proceed through the setup assistant. The device will wipe and restart.

Log in to AxM Portal
Once Apple Configurator 2 has finished, log into Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager in your browser.

Devices Tab
Click Devices from the sidebar.

Assign Device Management
Enter in the serial number of the device we prepared, select the device, click Assign Device Management, and choose the MDM server you added to Jamf Pro.

PreStage Assignment in Jamf Pro
Wait 5-10 minutes (for sync between Apple and Jamf), and in Jamf Pro assign the device to the desired PreStage Enrollment.

Complete Setup & Enrollment
Once the device is showing as "Assigned" to the PreStage, proceed through the setup assistant on the device and enroll the device.
